We often change the default wallpaper that comes with the iPad as we get bored seeing the same picture again and again. There are billions of wallpapers available on the Internet. However, not all look great on the iPad. The reason behind this is the resolution.
Many of us do not know that iPad is a great way of getting your portfolio noticed by the person sitting next to you. The display of iPad packs a decent 1024 x 768 pixels. However, iPad supports both landscape and portrait display. Thus, in portrait mode, you get 768 x 1024 pixel resolution. That is why you need to keep both modes in mind when creating a wallpaper meant to used on your iPad. For example: If you try to use a wallpaper with 1024 x 768 pixel image on your iPad and then, if you hold the iPad vertically, it will cut the photo off. Lot of space at the top and bottom will be left off as well.
The solution is to create a square image packing 1024 x 1024 pixels. However, keep in mind that some portions of the image may get chopped off, depending on how the user is holding his iPad. That is why we need to choose a safe area where the main person or thing in the wallpaper is visible. Safe area is roughly 768 x 768 so that the main person is never chopped off in either modes. In the end, save the image in either JPG or PNG format and then transfer it to your iPad through iTunes.
